The 10th University of Lucerne Law and Economics Conference was held March 17-18 in collaboration with the Notre Dame Law School Research Program on Law and Market Behavior (ND LAMB), which has co-sponsored most conferences in the series since 2015. The topic for this year’s anniversary conference was “Law and Economics of Justice: Efficiency, Reciprocity, Meritocracy.”
As in preceding years, the papers from the conference will be published by Springer Nature in the academic series “Economic Analysis of Law in European Legal Scholarship.” Each year, the conference focuses on a specific topic or theme such as Behavioural Law and Economics, Competition Law and Economics, Consumer Law and Economics, or Law and Economics of the Coronavirus Crisis.
Conference keynote lectures included Dr. Christoph Engel, Max Planck Institute Bonn, on “Law and Economics of Justice: An Embarrassment of Riches?,” Dr. Hans-Bernd Schäfer, Bucerius Law School, on “Should Security Against Crimes be Based on Efficiency or on Equal Fundamental Rights of Victims?,” and Dr. Avishalom Tor, professor of law and director of ND LAMB, on “The Malleability of Inequality Tradeoffs.”
Other Notre Dame Law School faculty who presented at this year’s conference included Sadie Blanchard, associate professor of law and ND LAMB faculty fellow, on “Contracting Under Threat of Incarceration” and Patrick M. Corrigan, associate professor of law and ND LAMB faculty fellow, on “Public Benefit Corporations and The Stockholder Sellout Problem.”
Notre Dame Law School Dean G. Marcus Cole also attended the conference, in a show of support for the thriving cooperation between the Law School and the University of Lucerne Faculty of Law.
“One of the goals of our Global Lawyering Initiative is to connect faculty with learning and research opportunities worldwide in order to better understand how legal issues transcend borders in today’s modern economy,” said Cole. “I am excited about the ongoing collaboration between Notre Dame Law School and the University of Lucerne, especially the successful Law and Economics conference, and look forward to our continued partnership together.”

The Research Program on Law and Market Behavior at Notre Dame Law School is dedicated to promoting foundational research that seeks to influence the way scholars and policymakers think about a range of timely legal and policy issues at the intersection of law and market behavior. Specifically, ND LAMB explores interdisciplinary research across a number of interrelated legal fields including corporate governance, antitrust, intellectual property, property and contract law, and the legal regulation of individuals and firms in the market more generally.
